The Story

“PRESENTED IN THE FIRST PERSON”

Howdy, friend. Ryan here. I’ll lay it right out for you: I’ve got a love for art directing, burly typography, writing words, design communities, making cool work with cool people, and talking shop with fellow appreciators of design minutiae. I like having a voice and using it, especially to help others say what they need to say.I’m originally from the great state of Rhode Island. Before throwing down professionally, I graduated from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts with an undergraduate degree in film studies, and went on to an MFA in graphic design from back home at the Rhode Island School of Design. Now I stake my claim in central Massachusetts, where I grill up projects large and small. I co-founded  Bay State Design Shop, a growing community that’s for New England-area designers, by New England-area designers, with my buddy Erik Weikert. Professionally, over the years I wrangled art direction, design, writing and community for MyFonts + Monotype, Dribbble, and Tree House Brewing Company.

ColophonThis site is built with semantic Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), responsive Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), and client-side ECMAScript (JavaScript). A bespoke local-first content editor authors schema-validated JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) documents, which a custom Node.js rendering engine transforms into static HTML pages. The editor’s live preview and page-generation pipeline share the same rendering logic and styles, with responsive layouts, independently configurable typography, and locally managed media assets. In full disclosure, we have no idea what any of that means. Enjoy nonetheless. Typefaces utilized include Sentinel, Neue Haas Grotesk Text, Neue Haas Grotesk Display, Monotype Grotesque Extra Condensed, and Monotype Grotesque Extended. Type delivered through Adobe Fonts.
